WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?

  • Blood pressure (BP) is a measurement of force that your heart is exerting on the blood vessels.
  • BP is represented by two numbers:

HOW CAN HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (BP) AFFECT MY KIDNEYS?

  • High blood pressure (BP) or hypertension can damage many organs including your kidneys.
  • Uncontrolled high BP can damage the small filters inside your kidneys, which then lose their important function.
  • Good control and frequent check of BP and a balance lifestyle can prevent these damages.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT KIDNEY DAMAGE FROM HIGH BP?

  • High blood pressure may be controlled in many people by diet particularly low salt.
  • Exercise is beneficial.
  • Take your blood pressure medications as per your doctor’s advice.
  • Check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medication especially anti-inflammatory pain killers.
  • Keep track of your medications and dosages.
  • Visit your doctor regularly, if needed.

SUMMARY

  • It is advised to always check your blood pressure and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • High blood pressure is a silent disease so regular monitoring and check-up are essential.
